Departmental reorganization concerning nuclear safety and radiation protection
The duties of the Minister of Economic Affairs with regard to nuclear safety and radiation protection were transferred to the Minister of Infrastructure and the Environment on 1 May 2015.
The cabinet made this decision at the recommendation of the International Atomic Energy Agency. This will clarify which departments are responsible for nuclear safety and radiation protection and which are responsible for energy policy.
The Minister of Economic Affairs will continue to safeguard the position of nuclear energy within the energy policy and the position of the Netherlands in the field of nuclear research, isotope production, and uranium enrichment. Other ministers will maintain their current responsibilities. These include: radiation protection for patients by the Minister of Health, Welfare, and Sports; radiation protection for employees by the Minister of Social Affairs and Employment; and non-proliferation and international coordination of nuclear safety and radiation protection by the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
