Advisory Board welcomes radiation protection expert
On October 21st, Filip Vanhavere became a member of our Advisory Board. In the coming 5 years, he will provide solicited and unsolicited advice to the Authority for Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection’s management board. To this end, he will be drawing from his extensive knowledge on radiation protection, as well as from his international experience.
Fresh look at Dutch practice
Vanhavere spends most of his time working as a specialist on radiation protection and dosimetry at the Belgian Nuclear Research Centre (SCK CEN). He also teaches at the Faculty of Medicine at KU Leuven, Belgium. His many years of experience in radiation protection make him a real asset to the Advisory Board of the Authority for Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection, as a member of which he will give his expert opinion on the way things are done in the Netherlands. And that is an opinion that can only aid the Authority’s further improvement. After all, protecting people from radiation is one of our most important tasks.
Learning from one another internationally
"One of our priority areas is continuous improvement," says Annemiek van Bolhuis, chair of the board of the Authority for Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection. "That goes hand in hand with continuous learning. And that’s exactly why good relationships with experts from the Netherlands and abroad are important. So we are thrilled to have Filip join our Advisory Board. Not only because of his obvious theoretical and practical knowledge, but also because he’s a linking pin in the expansion of international collaboration." The latter is a reference to the fact that Vanhavere is not only a Flemish associate professor and specialist, but also the chair of Eurados. This European network of 83 institutes drives international collaboration in radiation protection, as well as joint research.
Wise, independent advice
Vanhavere: "I’ve only just started, but I can already say I look forward to contributing to the Authority’s work and development. Especially given everything that’s going on in the Netherlands, from government plans for nuclear power plants to new technologies."
Vanhavere adds several knowledge areas to the Advisory Board. His advice is based on his radiation protection expertise, whereas other members advise on such areas as nuclear safety and cybersecurity. His advice is independent and will spark thorough and valuable discussions within the Authority for Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection.
