We invite your input on the Guidelines on the Safe Design and Operation of Nuclear Reactors

The ANVS is reviewing the Guidelines on the Safe Design and Operation of Nuclear Reactors (‘Guidelines’). The Guidelines set out what we believe to be the current state of the art in nuclear safety for reactors. It also explains how we assess licence applications for the construction of nuclear reactors. You can submit any comments you wish to make on the most recent version of the Guidelines, dated 2023, until 27 September 2024. We will take these comments into account when drafting the new version of the Guidelines.

Continuously developing

The ANVS must assess whether nuclear facilities comply with relevant safety requirements, as provided in the Dutch Nuclear Energy Act (in Dutch). A prerequisite for this safety is that a nuclear reactor should incorporate modern, reliable technology in its operations. Consequently, we always pay attention to the current state of the art and closely analyse international developments. Given the importance of ensuring the Guidelines are aligned with the current state of the art, we regularly check their content.

Important for parties in the field

The Guidelines provide insight into our assessment and evaluation processes for the nuclear industry and other interested parties. It therefore serves as an important, supportive and instructive document for parties in the field. Gathering feedback at this stage will help us ensure the next version is more current and user-friendly.

Responses may be submitted until 27 September 2024

You can submit any comment you wish to make in response to the Guidelines up to and including 27 September 2024 via Internetconsultatie.nl (in Dutch). Further information can also be found there. We are particularly interested in feedback on the technical substantive aspects of the Guidelines. Are there requirements, for example, or other matters in the Guidelines which you feel do not comply with the current state of the art? We also welcome other feedback, such as questions. We read all the comments and include them in a report which we publish on our website. In the report, we also outline the actions taken based on the comments.
