Elisabeth-Tweesteden Hospital and Verbeeten Institute bolster cooperation

The Authority for Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection (ANVS) intends to give Stichting Elisabeth-Tweesteden Ziekenhuis (ETZ) and Stichting Dr. Bernard Verbeeten Instituut (BVI) joint permission to perform activities with radioactive materials and devices at the Brugstraat 10 location in Tilburg. This property is home to BVI’s nuclear medicine and radiotherapy departments. ETZ and BVI have reached agreements on the tasks and responsibilities. Anyone can submit a response to this draft licence up to and including 15 November.

Improving patient care

ETZ and BVI provide specialised care to patients at multiple locations in North Brabant. They have already obtained permission from the ANVS for this purpose. ETZ and BVI will be applying for a new joint licence for Brugstraat 10 in Tilburg.

The healthcare institutions will become jointly responsible for the nuclear medicine department. This will ensure better alignment of radiological and nuclear medicine care within ETZ and BVI. The aim of this is to boost quality.

ETZ and BVI use the radioactive materials and devices (such as X-ray devices) in radiation treatment for cancer, for example, and in patient examinations. They can be used to find the exact location of tumours in cancer patients, which allows for more targeted irradiation.

Licences for the use of radioactive materials and X-ray devices previously issued

ETZ and BVI have already received Energy Act licences from the ANVS, allowing them to use radioactive materials in nuclear medicine as well as X-ray devices in the radiology department.
