Draft licence granted to Pro Rotating for maintenance of pumps containing naturally occurring radioactive materials

The ANVS intends to grant Pro Rotating B.V. a licence for the maintenance and cleaning of components of systems and installations containing naturally occurring radioactive materials. Pro Rotating intends to carry out these activities at two locations: on its own site (Laanweg 12, Spijkenisse) and at Bakker Repair B.V. (Ringerstraat 2, Sliedrecht). Our draft licence specifies the safety requirements that Pro Rotating must meet. Anyone can submit a response to this draft licence until 18 September 2024.

Naturally occurring radioactive materials in pumps

Pro Rotating primarily services pumps that pump liquefied natural gas (LNG) to systems and installations. Its activities also include cleaning these pumps. Systems and installations convert the liquefied natural gas into ordinary gas for everyday use. As radioactive materials are naturally present in natural gas, they can accumulate in system and installation components. A licence is needed for the maintenance and cleaning of these components.

Protecting people and the environment

In order to obtain the licence, Pro Rotating must demonstrate safe practices in handling the radioactive materials. They take specific safety precautions, for instance, to protect their maintenance engineers. These include ensuring that they wear personal protective equipment while working. Pro Rotating has also made a plan for the safe storage and disposal of the radioactive materials, aimed at ensuring that the materials do not enter the environment.
