Share your thoughts on the ANVS Regulations on nuclear pressure equipment and nuclear security

The Authority for Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection (ANVS) plans to include rules concerning nuclear pressure equipment and nuclear security in new ANVS Regulations. This is due to changes in legislation, which allow for the option of including certain components in ANVS Regulations. The rules for nuclear pressure equipment and nuclear security are now outlined in two ministerial regulations and are set to be transferred to ANVS Regulations. The aim is for the contents of the applicable rules to remain unchanged. You can respond to all components of these regulations up to and including 28 October 2024.

Pressure equipment ensures nuclear safety

Nuclear pressure equipment ensures nuclear safety in nuclear facilities. This equipment can be found in nuclear power plants, for example in the RPV or in the pipes that can come under great pressure.

Which rules will be included in the ANVS Regulations?

The ANVS Regulations will include technical and organisational rules that apply to nuclear pressure equipment and that refer to the security of nuclear facilities and fissionable materials. The regulations will also include rules for securing the transport of fissionable materials and radioactive sources.

Two parts of the rules will change

As stated above, the rules will generally remain the same. There are, however, two exceptions:

  1. Inspection bodies for nuclear pressure equipment will now receive a licence for five years (used to be two years). This augments performance and reduces the regulatory burden.
  2. All parties involved in the transport of certain radioactive materials will be required to align their security measures. This is necessary for compliance with international rules.

To whom do these rules apply?

The rules are intended for licensees, but also for everyone involved in the construction or maintenance of nuclear facilities. They are also intended for licensees who work with fissionable materials, ores or radioactive materials, and those responsible for the transportation of these materials.
