Draft licence for Laurentius Hospital Roermond for new approach to cardiological examinations
Laurentius Hospital Roermond has requested an amendment to its licence, which will permit the nuclear medicine department to use a new radioactive substance in cardiological exams. Laurentius Hospital conducts these exams at Mgr. Driessenstraat 6, Roermond. The draft licence specifies the safety requirements that the hospital must meet. Anyone can submit a response to this draft licence up to and including 22 January 2025.
Cardiological exams in 1 day instead of 2 days
The new licence will allow the hospital to use a strontium-82/rubidium-82 generator for PET-CT scans of the heart. These scans make it possible for doctors to examine the hearts of their patients. The generator creates a radioactive substance called rubidium-82 that leaves the body at a much faster rate than other radioactive materials and, as a result, allows cardiological examinations to be completed in one day instead of two. This also means fewer hospital visits for patients.
Protecting people and the environment
Laurentius Hospital must demonstrate safe practices in handling the radioactive substances. The same applies for the new machine. The new licence will only be issued to the hospital if the above is in order. The hospital must take safety measures to protect workers and patients from radiation and prevent too much radiation from impacting people and the environment.
