Cooperation with Belgian and Polish counterparts established

By entering into cooperation agreements, we plan to strengthen international ties with our counterparts in Belgium and initiate collaboration with our counterparts in Poland. Our aim in signing these agreements is to learn from each other’s knowledge and experience. They include, for example, an undertaking to increase the frequency of joint inspections with Belgium.

Joint inspections with the Belgian authority

The new agreement (in Dutch) with our Belgian counterparts at the Federal Agency for Nuclear Control (FANC) covers HR policy, cross-border participation and joint inspections. Back in December 2024, a Belgian inspector joined our team on an inspection at the Erasmus Hospital in Rotterdam.

The hospital produces nuclear medicinal products in the form of drugs that contain radioactive materials. These drugs are used to treat cancer patients, for example. During these inspections, we check that the hospital handles radiation and radioactive materials safely.

Poland has selected a supplier for major new nuclear power plant

The Netherlands can learn from Poland’s knowledge and experience. Like the Netherlands, the Polish government is seeking to build new nuclear power plants and its plans are at a more advanced stage. Poland has already selected a supplier for its first major nuclear power plant: the US company Westinghouse.

In addition, Poland has specified the nuclear reactor type it plans to use: an AP-1000. The Polish authorities are also in talks with South Korean supplier KHNP regarding an APR-1400 nuclear reactor. Both these suppliers are currently participating in technical feasibility studies for the construction of major new nuclear power plants here in the Netherlands.

Poland also shares the Netherlands’ ambitions as regards small modular nuclear reactors or SMR's. In light of these joint interests, the ANVS has concluded cooperation agreements with Polish nuclear regulator PAA for the first time.
