The ANVS intends to renew the licence granted to Eindhoven University of Technology for work involving radioactive materials and devices. The university uses radiation sources for research and education. The new licence applies to four other organisations on the Eindhoven University of Technology campus as well. The renewal will allow the licensees at Groene Loper 3 in Eindhoven to add a cyclotron, among other things. The renewed licence is also more in line with current legislation. The draft licence specifies how licensees should handle radiation sources and radioactive materials safely. Anyone is welcome to submit a response to the draft licence until 14 January 2026.

Scientific research and education
The university campus offers a range of Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes. Several of the university’s programmes and research projects require the use of ionising (radioactive) radiation. In addition, Eindhoven University of Technology conducts scientific research and produces radioactive materials for cancer treatment. The university already holds permission for this.
Better compliance with current legislation
The licence needs to be renewed because it is out of date. The new licence has been adapted to be more in line with current legislation.
Second cyclotron for production of radioactive materials
The licence also needs to change in response to developments at Eindhoven University of Technology. These include developments in the fields of research, education and the production of radioactive materials. One important change is the addition of a second cyclotron. Cyclotrons create radioactive materials that hospitals can use to detect or treat illnesses. To add another cyclotron, the university needs to renew its licence.
Multiple accelerators for scientific research
The university wants to add several accelerators for scientific research as well. The Eindhoven University of Technology Campus would like to carry out more research into nuclear fusion, among other things. This, too, requires a licence renewal.
Licence expansion to include 4 organisations
The renewed licence will cover 4 other organisations operating on the Eindhoven University of Technology campus which also collaborate with the university. For example, Fontys uses university devices in its programmes on campus.
Safe for people and the environment
After reviewing the licence application, we have determined that Eindhoven University of Technology and the other organisations are taking adequate measures to ensure the safety of people and the environment. Only qualified and trained personnel are permitted to handle radioactive materials and devices. The licence application shows that Eindhoven University of Technology and the other four organisations are enforcing this restriction.
