The Authority for Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection (ANVS) has updated its licence for the IJsselland Hospital Rotterdam. The hospital already held a licence for working with radioactive materials and devices, and the update was necessary to make the licence more structured. Interested parties have until 25 February 2026 to appeal against the licence.

Devices and radioactive substances for medical applications in the Rijnmond region

IJsselland Hospital Rotterdam is a regional general hospital that provides health services in the Rijnmond area. For this purpose, the hospital uses devices that emit ionising radiation, such as X-ray machines, and also uses radioactive materials for specific treatments, including cancer treatment.

IJsselland Hospital Rotterdam has four sites and works with ionising radiation or radioactive materials at three of them: its main site at Prins Constantijnweg 2, Capelle aan den IJssel, its site at Groenendaal 1, Krimpen aan den IJssel and the Kralingen site at Oudedijk 15, Rotterdam. The fourth site, Nesselande outpatient clinic, does not work with ionising radiation or radioactive materials.

Making the licence clearer and more practical

We advised IJsselland Hospital Rotterdam to update its licence. The licence held by the hospital originated from 1991 and had already been amended eight times, and the legislation has now also been changed. The result was that the licence had become unclear, while the updated licence provides information in a structured manner. The hospital is able to see at a glance what it has a licence for and what requirements it must meet. This will mean that the hospital will be able to more easily abide by the rules in a more effective way. In addition, it is easier for us to check whether the hospital is complying with the rules and handling radioactivity safely.

Appeals permitted until 25 February 2026

If you are an interested party and our licence will affect you directly, you have until 25 February 2026 to appeal against the licence. This is also possible if you cannot reasonably be held accountable for having failed to submit a statement of view earlier. Statements of view could be submitted up to 31 December 2025.
