On 1 July 2026, Ronald Jansen will take up his position as the new Director of the Competent Authority Department ('Directie Bevoegd Gezag') at the Dutch Authority for Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection (ANVS). As one of the three directors of the ANVS, he will be responsible for all licensing, supervision, and enforcement activities relating to radiation protection, nuclear safety, and transport in the Netherlands.

Growth and challenges at the ANVS

The Netherlands is developing plans for new nuclear power plants and is seeing a growing number of advanced medical applications involving radiation. The ANVS faces the challenge of continuing to ensure the safe use of radioactive materials while the sector expands and is therefore rapidly increasing its capabilities. Ronald Jansen is consequently joining us at a time of significant growth and development.

The Competent Authority Department, which Jansen will lead, faces several demanding assignments. These include major unique licensing and regulatory projects, such as the new PALLAS medical isotope reactor, new nuclear power plants and small modular reactors (SMRs), and the production of medical isotopes. In addition, day-to-day operations must be improved with the introduction of new systems and a long-term planning approach.

Experienced in promoting quality and safety

Ronald Jansen is currently head of the Medical Technology department at the Health and Youth Care Inspectorate (IGJ). He studied biology in Utrecht and epidemiology in Rotterdam.

Ronald started his career in the private sector, where he held various positions in the pharmaceutical industry. He later moved into government service, working as a senior policy adviser at the Dutch Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS). He has also served as a department head at several Dutch regulatory and licensing bodies dedicated to advancing quality and safety standards, including the Medicines Evaluation Board and the State Supervision of Mines.

Fully committed to nuclear safety and radiation protection

“I am looking forward to joining the ANVS and, in particular, its Competent Authority department,” says Ronald Jansen. “I have come to know the ANVS as an ambitious and professional organisation that is undergoing significant development. I am fully committed to working together with my colleagues to contribute to nuclear safety and radiation protection in the Netherlands.”

Says Ronald Jansen’s predecessor, Bernd Keller: “I look back on a wonderful time at the ANVS. It is an outstanding organisation in transition, with dedicated and supportive colleagues. In various roles, I have contributed to what the ANVS is today. The time has now come for me to hand over the responsibility for the Competent Authority Department with confidence to my successor, Ronald Jansen. I wish him and the ANVS every success.”
