Businesses that work with radioactive material must ensure that this is done safely. In this way, they protect their employees and members of the public against exposure to ionising radiation. The ANVS supports companies in this regard by providing guidelines that explain the statutory rules and offer practical tips. Our latest guideline concerns the security of radioactive substances (BRAS).
Securing radioactive materials
Radioactive material emits ionising radiation. Theft, misuse, or sabotage can all lead to the misuse or release of radioactive material. Therefore, an organisation that manages radioactive substances must ensure proper security. Companies are themselves responsible for establishing effective security systems and measures. As ANVS, we monitor whether this is being done correctly.
International recommendations
This new version of the guideline on the security of radioactive materials is an update of previous versions from 2021 and 2013. The main reason for this update was the report of the international IAEA IPPAS mission to the Netherlands in 2023. The recommendations from that report are included in this guideline.
Guidelines are recommendations, not legislation
A guideline from the ANVS is not a legal requirement, but indicates how existing regulations can be implemented. These recommendations are not binding. Licensees always have the option to choose a different approach, provided they can demonstrate that this approach also complies with the regulations.
