Role of the ANVS

The Authority for Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection (ANVS) independently administers and assesses licence applications under the Nuclear Energy Act, only issuing licences to applicants who can ensure a safe situation. SHINE has shown that this is the case and that it is taking appropriate measures for the protection of people and the environment.

Purpose of the licence

SHINE produces medical isotopes. These are radioactive substances which are used in medicine. SHINE has applied for the licence to be allowed to produce the medical isotope lutetium-177 for the European market. Lutetium-177 is used to treat various types of cancer. By attaching this radioactive substance to a specific medication, tumour cells can be destroyed effectively without damaging healthy tissue. SHINE will be building the plant on the Dallen II industrial estate, on Dalweg 12 in Veendam.
